Late Middle Ages

Although marked by some of the worst events in world history, the Late Middle Ages, from 1300 to 1500 AD, is an important time to understand, not only for European history but for world history. More importantly, it was during this time that the foundations of the modern era were established.
The catastrophes of the Late Middle Ages
Filled with many catastrophes, the Late Middle Ages featured devastating occurrences in world history. One of the major events that occurred during this time was the 100 Years War between the British and the French for control of France. Additionally, during this time, there were divisions within the Catholic church, which ultimately led to the Great Schism. It was also during this time that the Black Death and the Great Famine occurred. Also, the Crusades, a conflict between Arabs and Christians, occurred during this time period, and they were ultimately won by the Arab forces, resulting in the capture of Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire.
Positive developments during the Late Middle Ages
Despite its status as an era marked by horrific events, the Late Middle Ages provided many changes in society that are still evident today. It was during this period that many of the various denominations of Christianity began to emerge, primarily as a response to the split of Catholicism and the range of new beliefs that arose during the Great Schism. Additionally, the Crusades marked the beginning of Arab domination of the Middle East. It was also during this time that firearms were first used in a major war- the 100 Years War. On a lighter note, it was also during this time period that construction of the Great Wall of China was undertaken.
The Late Middle Ages are an important time period in world history. By studying this period, it is clear that Its horrors and its triumphs continue to influence our lives today.
